撒母耳記上17章20-37節: 講義(龍漢泉弟兄)
大衛預備出戰歌利亞
撒母耳記裡面三個最主要的人物，撒母耳、掃羅、和大衛，都已經一一登場。他們三個人都是被耶和華所揀選並使用的人，但是結局卻不一樣。在他們被主使用之前都經過一段裝備的時間。撒母耳從小就被送到聖殿受訓，長大以後承接了以利的職分，並且成為先知。神藉他所說的話都一一應驗，奠定了他在以色列人中的地位（撒上3:19-20撒母耳長大了，耶和華與他同在，使他所說的話一句都不落空。從但到別是巴所有的以色列人都知道耶和華立撒母耳為先知。）。他至死忠心，即使從士師的職分上退休了也仍然不斷地為以色列人禱告（12:23至於我，斷不停止為你們禱告，以致得罪耶和華。我必以善道正路指教你們。）最後還被神差派去膏立了大衛（16章）。
相比之下掃羅受訓的時間比較短，但從他早期的作為和品性當中可以看出來，他在家裡面是受到良好的教育。他忠心、謙卑、溫和、善良；當他被按立之後，神藉著他打了一次勝仗，奠定了他在以色列中作王的地位。雖然有人不服他，藐視他，他也沒有放在心上。然而當他做王之後就心裡驕傲，離棄神，以至最後被神棄絕。
大衛則是從小就在草地牧羊，這也幫助了他以後怎麼樣治理國家。我們從他所寫的詩篇和生平的事蹟當中可以看出，他知道怎麼樣牧養百姓，因為他有牧養羊群的經歷。他是一個詩人，是個音樂家，是個戰士，也是個先知。他在詩篇裡面寫了許許多多關於彌賽亞的詩歌。他也在牧羊的生涯當中，展示出了他的勇敢、能力，以及倚靠耶和華的心志（參34-37節）。
在前一章（第16章）當中我們看見大衛被撒母耳膏抹，預定他作以色列的君王，因此神也要藉著一些特別的作為，將他彰顯在以色列人面前，為他將來做王奠定根基。17章就是描寫他第一次的戰役。這一章講述他怎麼樣擊敗歌利亞，我們可以順便了解他如何準備出戰。從外表來看，大衛是居於絕對的劣勢，不論怎麼看都不可能打敗歌利亞。但是最後靠著神的大能，大衛擊殺了他，完成了人看為不可能的任務。因此『大衛與歌利亞』在西方世界成為了一個諺語。這句話今天的含義，表示處於極端劣勢的情況。這是一種較弱的對手面對更大、更強的對手的競賽，就如一個小國面對一個超級強國的情形類似。
他一生雖然有一些污點，但他跟掃羅最大的不同，就是他願意悔改認罪，謙卑降服在神面前。他也為我們立下了一個很好的榜樣，就是神願意人認罪悔改，回轉歸向神。這也是他為什麼被稱為合神心意的僕人。神並沒有規定我們要成為一個完全聖潔不犯罪的人，因為我們活在這個肉身之中，就難免會犯罪。但神希望我們犯罪之後，能夠認罪悔改，再一次回到神的面前。如果我們能夠這樣做，我相信有一天神也會稱我們是合他心意的僕人。
這一場戰役極具戲劇性，因此屢次被搬上銀幕。如果我們在看這一章的時候，能夠像看電影一樣，將自己代入其中的情景，也許會有更加深刻的感受。你可以將自己代入大衛，或
是歌利亞，或是掃羅，或是大衛的兄長，或是百姓等等。你可以嘗試著去體會他們當時的心情，以及對於整個事情發生之後的反應。這樣比單純念一章聖經要有趣得多。
I. 大衛來到戰場（20-24）
17:20 大衛早晨起來，將羊交託一個看守的人，照着他父親所吩咐的話，帶着食物去了。到了輜重營，軍兵剛出到戰場，吶喊要戰。
17:21 以色列人和非利士人都擺列隊伍，彼此相對。 17:22 大衛把他帶來的食物留在看守物件人的手下，跑到戰場，問他哥哥們安。
17:23 與他們說話的時候，那討戰的，就是屬迦特的非利士人歌利亞，從非利士隊中出來，說從前所說的話；大衛都聽見了。
17:24 以色列眾人看見那人，就逃跑，極其害怕。
20『照着他父親所吩咐的話』
這句話就表明了大衛順服的心。他是一個孝順的兒子，父親怎麼吩咐，他就怎麼遵行。從伯利恆到以拉谷還有二十多公里的路程，當時還是在跟非利士人打仗的時候。可是大衛沒有任何的猶豫，就照著父親的吩咐去了。這也是我們的天父對他的兒女的一個期盼。他希望我們每一個人都做一個順命的兒女，按照他的吩咐去行。
『將羊交託一個看守的人』
從前一章中我們看到大衛牧放他父親的羊群。他父親既然將羊群交給他，他就盡責到底。這一次他要去戰場看望他哥哥們，因此他離開的這段時間就將羊群交給看守的人。可能是他牧羊的同伴，也可能是特別雇用的一個人。無論如何，從這裡我們可以看見大衛是一個盡忠職守的人。他承擔了一個責任，就會盡力將這個責任做好。這也是我們的主對他的僕人的要求。主耶穌的比喻當中，經常提到忠心的僕人。巴不得我們每一個人將來見主面的時候，都被主耶穌稱為又良善又忠心的僕人。
一般學者都認為當時大衛大概是17-18歲左右，也就是今天的11年級到12年級。我們可以想想看，當我自己是這個年紀的時候，我是怎麼樣的一個人？而大衛呢，他大概很早就被父親差派去牧羊。他每天要陪伴著羊群，而不是跟他的同伴們一起玩耍。要知道大衛並不是一個文文靜靜的白面書生，他乃是一個勇敢的戰士。他可以徒手跟獅子或熊搏鬥，甚至擊殺他們。可是他能夠安靜地牧養羊群，而且我們沒有看見他有任何的抱怨，可見他在這牧養的生涯當中，也被神操練，成為一個能夠忍耐安靜的人。
不但如此，他還是一個詩人，一個音樂家。前一章談到他去掃羅那裡，用手彈琴使掃羅能夠心裡平靜。因著他這一段的牧人生涯，他後來寫下了傳頌千古的詩篇23篇。因此我們可以說，他是一個文武雙全的大才，文可安邦，武可定國。
21『以色列人和非利士人都擺列隊伍，彼此相對』 參17:3非利士人站在這邊山上，以色列人站在那邊山上，當中有谷。這谷就是以拉谷（17:2,19）。參附錄地圖。後來大衛和歌利亞的戰鬥就是發生在這谷中。
22『跑到戰場，問他哥哥們安』 根據後來他哥哥跟他的對話，他可能才剛開始和他哥哥們談話的時候（參23與他們說話的時候），就聽見了歌利亞挑釁的言語。參28節『在曠野的那幾隻羊，你交託了誰呢？』
23『說從前所說的話』 就是本章8到10節所說的話。17:8-10歌利亞對着以色列的軍隊站立，呼叫說：「你們出來擺列隊伍做甚麼呢？我不是非利士人嗎？你們不是掃羅的僕人嗎？可以從你們中間揀選一人，使他下到我這裏來。他若能與我戰鬥，將我殺死，我們就作你們的僕人；我若勝了他，將他殺死，你們就作我們的僕人，服事我們。」那非利士人又說：「我今日向以色列人的軍隊罵陣。你們叫一個人出來，與我戰鬥。」
24『就逃跑，極其害怕』 當時可能雙方都有戰士下到谷中，彼此吶喊。可是當歌利亞出來的時候，這些以色列的士兵就嚇跑，逃到軍營中去了。作為神的子民，當你看到這幕場景的時候，你有什麼感觸呢？也許你會為以色列人感到悲哀，覺得他們被外邦人如此的欺壓侮辱。另一方面你也許會感到憤怒，不但憤怒歌利亞狂傲的言語，對以色列人民的挑釁，同時也對以色列人的膽怯感到憤怒。他們已經忘記了神藉著撒母耳和掃羅/約拿單的手為他們所行的大事（撒上7,11,13-14,15章），他們所看見的只是人的力量。當他們看到歌利亞是如此的高大強壯的時候，他們的心就退縮了，甚至連出戰的勇氣都沒有。
今天也是一樣，我們也是很容易就忘記神在我們身上的作為。魔鬼的勢力似乎是非常龐大，我們所看見所聽見的新聞，似乎都是抵擋神，反對神的。我們是不是也感到外界的壓力很大呢？是不是覺得我們對這一種時勢感到無能為力呢？是不是當我們面對邪惡勢力挑戰的時候，我們也像以色列人一樣退縮呢？我們曾否以神的角度來看這一切事，並且依靠神的力量來面對這一切事呢？大衛是從神的角度來看這個其他人害怕的情勢。從神的角度看問題，可以讓我們看到問題的本質，從而把棘手的難題簡單化。我們對情勢看得清楚，就更能發揮作戰的能力。這是我們需要去思考反省的一件事情。
在這一段當中你看見了大衛哪些優點？有什麼可以效法的地方？
大衛牧羊的經歷對他的生平有什麼影響？可否舉例說明？
當你看到以色列人逃跑的時候，你有什麼感觸？他們為什麼逃跑？
我遇見邪惡勢力攻擊的時候是否也是退縮逃避？有什麼實際的例子嗎？

II. 大衛為神的名發熱心（25-29）
17:25 以色列人彼此說：「這上來的人你看見了嗎？他上來是要向以色列人罵陣。若有能殺他的，王必賞賜他大財，將自己的女兒給他為妻，並在以色列人中免他父家納糧當差。」
17:26 大衛問站在旁邊的人說：「有人殺這非利士人，除掉以色列人的恥辱，怎樣待他呢？這未受割禮的非利士人是誰呢？竟敢向永生神的軍隊罵陣嗎？」
17:27 百姓照先前的話回答他說：「有人能殺這非利士人，必如此如此待他。」
17:28 大衛的長兄以利押聽見大衛與他們所說的話，就向他發怒，說：「你下來做甚麼呢？在曠野的那幾隻羊，你交託了誰呢？我知道你的驕傲和你心裏的惡意，你下來特為要看爭戰！」 17:29 大衛說：「我做了甚麼呢？我來豈沒有緣故嗎？」
25『向以色列人罵陣defy Israel』
defy挑釁，藐視。這裡的罵陣不僅僅是挑戰，也是對他們的藐視和侮辱。
『免他父家納糧當差exempt from taxes and public service』
納糧就是交稅的意思，而當差就是勞動服務，可能還包括了參與戰役。參8:11-17管轄你們的王必這樣行：他必派你們的兒子為他趕車、跟馬，奔走在車前；又派他們作千夫長、五十夫長，為他耕種田地，收割莊稼，打造軍器和車上的器械；必取你們的女兒為他製造香膏，做飯烤餅；也必取你們最好的田地、葡萄園、橄欖園賜給他的臣僕。你們的糧食和葡萄園所出的，他必取十分之一給他的太監和臣僕；又必取你們的僕人婢女，健壯的少年人和你們的驢，供他的差役。你們的羊群他必取十分之一，你們也必作他的僕人。
26『除掉以色列人的恥辱』
歌利亞連續罵陣40天，以色列沒有人敢出來應戰，這是一個極大的恥辱。用我們平常的話來說，就是當面打耳光，你還不敢反抗。這讓以色列人在非利士人面前抬不起頭來。唯一能夠除掉這個恥辱的方法就是殺死歌利亞。大衛後來要求出戰是為了要除掉以色列人的恥辱，而不是為了追求自己飛黃騰達的機會。
『未受割禮的非利士人』
『未受割禮』是以色列人形容外邦人的常用語。在舊約和新約當中都可以看到。特別在舊約當中這是帶著一種藐視的意思。因為未受割禮就代表他們跟神沒有立約，不是神的子民。反過來說，惟有以色列人乃是藉著割禮跟神立約，成為神的子民。所以這邊說『未受割禮的非利士人』意思就是不是屬於神的非利士人。歌利亞也許身高體壯，藐視以色列人；但是從大衛的眼光來看，在神面前他們乃是被藐視的。
『向永生神的軍隊罵陣defy the armies of the living God』
從表面上來看，歌利亞是向以色列的軍隊罵陣。但是從大衛來看，以色列人乃是屬於神的，所以以色列的軍隊就是神的軍隊。當歌利亞向以色列軍隊罵陣的時候，他乃是向永生神的軍隊罵陣。所以他不是跟人作戰，乃是跟神作戰。但其他以色列人顯然不這樣認為，或是他們早就忘記了他們是永生神的軍隊。因此我們面對邪惡勢力攻擊的時候，不要像以色列人一樣忘記敵人不是攻擊我們，乃是攻擊神；我們也不是憑著自己與他們爭戰，乃是我們的元帥基督耶穌率領我們出戰。
28『就向他發怒burned with anger 』
他的哥哥為什麼會向他大發烈怒，好像不是很清楚，但我們可以稍微揣測一下。首先如我們前面所說的，他哥哥才剛與大衛交談，還不了解狀況，因為他說『在曠野的那幾隻羊，你交託了誰呢？』所以他不知道大衛為什麼會來到戰場。因此他才說『你下來做甚麼呢？』英文就是『你為什麼下來呢？Why have you come down here?』當他聽到大衛詢問其他人關於歌利亞的事情的時候，他可能覺得自尊心受到傷害，因為整個以色列軍隊當中有40天之久，沒有人敢出去應戰。
『你的驕傲和你心裏的惡意』
因此當大衛這樣詢問的時候，他可能覺得大衛是要看他們的笑話，或者要表現自己比他們都勇敢。這是他為什麼說大衛驕傲，並且心裡懷著惡意。
29『我來豈沒有緣故嗎Was it not but a word/question? Or Can’t I even speak?』大衛沒有正面與他哥哥衝突，只是回覆了一句『我做了甚麼呢？我來豈沒有緣故嗎？』這裡說『我來豈沒有緣故嗎？』意思就是說我難道不能問問題嗎？或者說我難道不能夠講話嗎？這也是我們可以學習的地方。當我們被人誤解或是被攻擊的時候，我們仍然要保持冷靜，用心平氣和的態度來為自己辯駁，而不是用爭吵的方式來解決。
為什麼歌利亞向以色列人罵陣是他們的恥辱？有什麼可以效法的地方？
大衛聽到歌利亞的話，有什麼反應？他為什麼稱以色列人為永生神的軍隊？
他哥哥為什麼向他大發烈怒？他的反應是什麼？
如果我是大衛，聽見哥哥這樣的責罵，我會有什麼反應？
在這一段中我可以從大衛身上學到什麼功課？有什麼需要改進的地方？
III. 大衛靠神挺身而出（30-37）
17:30 大衛就離開他轉向別人，照先前的話而問；百姓仍照先前的話回答他。
17:31 有人聽見大衛所說的話，就告訴了掃羅；掃羅便打發人叫他來。
17:32 大衛對掃羅說：「人都不必因那非利士人膽怯。你的僕人要去與那非利士人戰鬥。」
17:33 掃羅對大衛說：「你不能去與那非利士人戰鬥；因為你年紀太輕，他自幼就作戰士。」
17:34 大衛對掃羅說：「你僕人為父親放羊，有時來了獅子，有時來了熊，從群中啣一隻羊羔去。
17:35 我就追趕牠，擊打牠，將羊羔從牠口中救出來。牠起來要害我，我就揪着牠的鬍子，將牠打死。
17:36 你僕人曾打死獅子和熊，這未受割禮的非利士人向永生神的軍隊罵陣，也必像獅子和熊一般。」
17:37 大衛又說：「耶和華救我脫離獅子和熊的爪，也必救我脫離這非利士人的手。」掃羅對大衛說：「你可以去吧！耶和華必與你同在。」
30『轉向別人，照先前的話而問』
大衛繼續詢問，可能是要證實那些人說的話，也因此證實了當時情勢的急迫。
31『有人聽見大衛所說的話，就告訴了掃羅』
我們可以想像一下：一個少年人跑到戰場，一點都不害怕，反而一再詢問關於歌利亞以及掃羅所應許的事情。一個小孩子這樣問來問去，當然會引起旁人的注意。因此當其他的以色列軍人看見這件事的時候，就報告給掃羅王。
32『人都不必因那非利士人膽怯』
一個少年人對一個身經百戰的君王說：你們都不要怕。這是一幅很有意思的圖畫。不知道當掃羅聽見的時候，他心裡做何感想。他是覺得很慚愧呢（這本來應該是他的責任）？還是覺得這個少年人不知天高地厚？而且當大衛繼續說『你的僕人要去與那非利士人戰鬥』的時候，他的感觸應該更深了。
33『你年紀太輕，他自幼就作戰士』
他心裡可能還是覺得大衛年少氣盛，不知道敵人是多麼的厲害。一個少年人，從來沒有當過兵，沒有任何戰場上的經歷，怎麼可能跟一個在戰場上廝殺多年的戰士相比呢？因此掃羅的第一個反應就是大衛不夠資格去跟歌利亞作戰。他跟其他的以色列人一樣，都是從人的觀點來看事情。他們都已經忘記了神的偉大和能力，完全不記得神以前怎麼樣幫助他們戰勝仇敵。
35『追趕牠，擊打牠…揪着牠的鬍子，將牠打死』
然而大衛的反應卻是出乎掃羅意料之外。他雖然沒有當兵的經歷，然而他並不是一個手無縛雞之力的少年人。當他牧放他父親的羊群的時候，他學會了怎麼樣保護它們。他必須時常防範猛獸的襲擊，甚至要與他們搏鬥。如果只根據他的外表來看的話（16:12他面色光紅，雙目清秀，容貌俊美），大概沒有人會覺得他是如此的勇敢善戰。但他能夠赤手空拳的將獅子和熊打死，這已經遠遠超乎一般人的能力了。在這之前似乎只有參孫曾經徒手將獅子打死。參士14:6 耶和華的靈大大感動參孫，他雖然手無器械，卻將獅子撕裂，如同撕裂山羊羔一樣。他行這事並沒有告訴父母。
36『也必像獅子和熊一般』
獅子和熊雖然兇猛，但是大衛毫無所懼。在他眼中，歌利亞也不過就是像獅子或是熊一樣罷了。他能夠打死獅子和熊，也就能夠打死歌利亞。
37『耶和華救我脫離獅子和熊的爪，也必救我脫離這非利士人的手』
大衛清楚的知道，他能夠打死獅子和熊，並不是因為自己有什麼能耐，乃是因為耶和華神的幫助。他並不像掃羅一樣，有了一些成就就自高自大，乃是很清楚自己的地位。因此他深信神也會繼續幫助他，打敗非利士的勇士歌利亞。我們如果能夠有大衛一樣的信心，那今天碰到任何困難的時候，我們都能夠倚靠神度過這些難處，即使是人看來不可能解決的問題，就像歌利亞一樣巨大的問題。另外一方面，掃羅也陷入了左右為難的局面。如果他拒絕大衛去作戰，人民就會期盼他作為國王在這場戰事上帶頭出戰歌利亞。如果他讓大衛
去作戰，結果被歌利亞殺了，那戰爭就失敗了，以色列就會再次受非利士人的奴役（參17:9他若能與我戰鬥，將我殺死，我們就作你們的僕人；我若勝了他，將他殺死，你們就作我們的僕人，服事我們。）然而既然沒有人敢挺身而出，包括他自己，他只得同意大衛去與歌利亞戰鬥。大衛既然說耶和華必定幫助他，掃羅也就祝福他說，耶和華必與你同在。他心裡大概也是這樣祈求吧。
作為一國的君王，掃羅面對這樣的情況應該如何行？他的責任是什麼？
你若是掃羅，當你聽見大衛說『人都不必因那非利士人膽怯』，你的反應是什麼？
掃羅怎麼回答大衛？他是從哪種角度看大衛？
大衛怎麼回覆掃羅？他有什麼憑據證明他可以出戰？
大衛看歌利亞像什麼？以色列人看歌利亞像什麼？為什麼有這種區別？
大衛覺得自己很厲害嗎？他認為他為什麼可以殺死獅子和熊？
在這一點上大衛與掃羅有什麼不同？大衛是靠著什麼去與歌利亞爭戰？

20 Early in the morning David left the flock in the care of a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry.
21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other.
22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were.
23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it.
24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.
25 Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel.”
26 David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
27 They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “ And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”
29 “Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?”
30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before.
31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.
32 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”
33 Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,
35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.
36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.
37 The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you.”

20 And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry.
21 And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army.
22 And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers.
23 As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him.
24 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid.
25 And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel.”
26 And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
27 And the people answered him in the same way, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”
28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, “And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
29 And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?”
30 And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.
31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock,
35 I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.
36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
37 And David said, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you!”

20 So David got up early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper, and took the supplies and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the entrenchment encircling the camp while the army was going out in battle formation, shouting the war cry.
21 Israel and the Philistines drew up in battle formation, army against army.
22 Then David left the baggage in the [n]care of the baggage keeper and ran to the battle line. And he entered and [o]greeted his brothers.
23 As he was speaking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine from Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the army of the Philistines, and he spoke these same words; and David heard him.
24 When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him and were very fearful.
25 And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to defy Israel. And it will be that the king will make the man who kills him wealthy with great riches, and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house [p]free in Israel.”
26 Then David said to the men who were standing by him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and rids Israel of the disgrace? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he has dared to defy the armies of the living God?”
27 The people [q]answered him in agreement with this statement, saying, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard him when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David and he said, “Why is it that you have come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I myself know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart; for you have come down in order to see the battle.”
29 But David said, “What have I done now? Was it not just a [r]question?”
30 Then he turned [s]away from him to another and said the same thing; and the people replied with the same words as [t]before.
31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they informed [u]Saul, and he [v]sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, “May no one’s heart fail on account of him; your servant will go and fight this Philistine!”
33 But Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight him; for you are only a youth, while he has been a warrior since his youth.”
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a sheep from the flock,
35 I went out after it and [w]attacked it, and rescued the sheep from its mouth; and when it rose up against me, I grabbed it by its mane and struck it and killed it.
36 Your servant has [x]killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.”
37 And David said, “The LORD who saved me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, He will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” So Saul said to David, “Go, and may the LORD be with you.”
